Install Windows 7 or Windows Vista using a USB flash drive

If you want to Install Windows 7 using a USB flash drive or Install Windows Vista using a USB flash drive.

You will require :

  1. Windows 7 or Windows Vista installation DVD or ISO image
  2. USB Flash drive (min. 4 GB size)
  3. Another system with Windows 7 or Windows Vista installed already in it.

Before proceed further, first back all of your USB flash drive’s data as we are going to format it in order to make it boot-able. Ok. Plug in your USB Flash Drive and follow these steps:

  1. Open a command prompt as administrator (Right click on Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt and select “Run as administrator
  2. Give the command “diskpart” on command prompt Window. This will give you a “DISKPART” prompt.
  3. Now type “list disk”, it will list all disk-drive and their number. Note down your USB flash disk drive number. (Be careful to note down this, if you noted it wrongly you’ll end up by wiping your whole hard disk)

For example it’s 1 in my case, as you can see in given screen shot that it’s the only drive having 4GB size.

  1. Type “select disk 1”. Here replace the number “1” with the number of you noted for your disk.
  2. Type “clean”.
  3. Type “create partition primary”.
  4. Type “select partition 1”
  5. Type “active”.
  6. Type “format fs=NTFS”.
  7. Type “assign”.
  8. Now type “exit” to leave “DISKPART” prompt. See this for your reference:
  9. Insert your Windows Vista or 7 DVD into your drive and change directory to the DVD’s boot directory. In my case it’s E:\BOOTIf your DVD ROM is not working and you have ISO image of your disk please follow instruction given here:How to install Windows XP/7 using a pen drive : Make a boot-able pen drive
  10. Type “bootsect /nt60 g:”, if no error message your pen drive has become boot-able now. Replace g: with the drive letter of your USB disk drive.
  11. Now copy all folder and files from your DVD to your pen drive.
  12. Once finished boot from your USB drive.
